LA MAMA FAQ'S

Answering Your Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about LA MAMA and the hypnobirthing & birth prep courses I offer. I am here to give you the answers you need to all of your questions and concerns. If you still have something you’d like to know, feel free to contact me for more details.

WHO IS LA MAMA?

All of you! We are all mothers to someone or something but if you're here you're probably an expectant or quite new mama too :)
As for me, my name is Romany and I am now living back in France, in Chamonix, with my daughter Ada. Having had a hypnobirth with Ada I felt it was my calling to spread the knowledge and the love and trained as an instructor with KGHypnobirthing and their Royal College of Midwife accredited course.

I've since taught many mamas and their birth partners (over 50 of you now!) and am reminded every single time of the incredible strength of women and their birth partners.

I am passionate and honoured to be a birth educator and being a part of this beautiful journey you're on.

See the About page for more on my journey.

Bristol Hypnobirthing - Postive Birth

Ada and I minutes after she was born!

I TAKE THE COURSE, BUT THEN WHAT?

The course doesn't stop when our time together does! As you listen to your guided relaxations and practice other things you learn in the course, you will be creating a calmer and confident you everyday.

My help is ongoing. I am there for you, and your birthing partner and anyone else who may have concerns or questions. If you feel like you need extra support in any way, call me. If you feel vulnerable after an appointment, call me. If you just need to be heard, call me! I will be able to signpost you where needed if I can not answer your queries myself, I will not be able to give you medical advice but I will do everything I can to reassure and help in whatever way I can.

WILL I HAVE TO BE HYPNOTISED?

The short answer is no. Hypnobirthing uses the wonderfully effective principles of hypnotherapy to induce deep states of relaxation which help prepare you all for a calm birth. You will be conscious at all times. Or if you prefer you can just fall asleep, it works just as well, if not better!

WHEN SHOULD I DO MY COURSE?

A good time to come would be any time after 20 weeks as you'll naturally start to think about the latter part of your pregnancy and the birth of your baby. This also gives you plenty of time to put into practice the tools you will learn throughout the course.

You can do the pregnancy mindfulness course anytime though.

I DON'T WANT TO GIVE BIRTH AT HOME? I'M NOT THE FAIRY LIGHTS/GIVING BIRTH WITH FLOWERS IN MY BATH TYPE. IS HYPNOBIRTHING STILL FOR ME?

A resounding YES! Hypnobirthing is for everyone! It isn't limited to what you might think of as a ''natural birth''. It's not prescriptive so nothing is right or wrong here. The idea is to make sure you're well prepared with the best toolbox so that you can face anything that's thrown at you during pregnancy, labour and birth! The course is based on logical and evidence based information, no dancing around a fire with flowers in our hair, although that sounds like a great way to spend a summer evening.

WHO CAN I BRING WITH ME?

Your birthing partner. This can be your partner in life, your mum, your dad, your cousin, sister, neighbour... Saying that, you can absolutely come on your own. Hypnobirthing works just as well with or without a partner.

When doing the course online you are free to bring as many partners as you wish!

HOW CAN I CONVINCE MY SCEPTICAL PARTNER TO ACCOMPANY ME?

Most people will have some sort of preconceptions about hypnobirthing due to its name, or maybe the extra cost.
Make them aware that there will be no chanting or crystal holding and that their role is extremely valued, way more than in your average antenatal class.

The La Mama course makes sure the birth partner realises his or her full potential as a valuable asset in this journey.

They are as important, if not more, as the caregivers. They are your number 1 and therefore will greatly benefit form the information learned on the course.

WITH ALL THE COSTS OF HAVING A BABY, I CAN'T REALLY AFFORD THIS TOO.

Ok this isn't a question but it's something we hear a lot so I wanted to put it out there.

The benefits of birth preparation & hypnobirthing are hard to quantify into dollar signs and those who have had empowered births will tell you it's worth way more than any amount of money they might have spent on a course.

It's important to understand that La Mama hypnobirthing courses are a lot more than a usual antenatal course. It's an all encompassing preparation course that lasts way beyond the actual class times into your everyday, through practice.

Midwives and birth practitioners are becoming aware of its major effect on labouring mothers and their partners and the importance of hypnobirthing for everyone.

When you decide to do this course you are investing in yourself as well as your baby. The calmer the mama, the calmer the babe's transition into the world will be.

I mainly blame our society for our reluctance to invest in ourselves.

We're encouraged to spend thousands on material things all the time (sofas, wedding dresses, pram..) so why not something that has the potential to change the world?

You can pay in instalments to spread the cost before your course starts.

Everyone deserves the best birth possible so I strive to make things work for those on low incomes.

I also offer 2-3 bursary placements per year for mothers in vulnerable situations.

Please contact me for details.
